About CTO

The Canadian Toilet Organization (CTO) is a federal, non-profit NGO founded in Toronto in 2008 in response to the “call to action” made at World Toilet Summit 2007 in New Delhi, India by United Nations Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB) Chairman HRH Willem-Alexander, the Prince of Orange of The Netherlands.

WHO and UNICEF estimates that 2.5 billion people, living mainly in developing countries, do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities. This is indeed a shocking figure that needs to be addressed immediately.

Canadians’ most basic of needs are satisfied daily without having to worry about waste disposal. However, many deficits are still found outside the home. Missing, poorly designed or abysmally maintained public toilets are quite common. Toilets are a taboo subject in our culture, hindering the improvement of the situation.

As a water-rich nation, Canada has a responsibility to protect and preserve its fresh water reserves for future generations. Yet because water literally is cheaper than dirt, water conservation is not a typical practice of consumers and industry alike. Unfortunately, the water-based sewage systems commonly employed throughout Canada are some of the largest consumers -- and wasters -- of water. According to Statistics Canada, up to one-third of the water used by an average Canadian family is flushed down the toilet. This practice can and indeed must change.

The Canadian Toilet Organization will serve as the catalyst towards that change.
